While Movember is often associated with prostate cancer awareness, it is also meant to raise awareness about men's mental health. I think this is really important, because currently mental health maladies receive much less attention than other diseases, many of which (by contrast) affect far fewer people.
This year, instead of (only) growing a fantastic moustache, I plan to also raise money to combat mental health issues. After a bit of looking, I settled on The Brain & Behaviour Research Foundation, which is a charity dedicated to funding research into mental health issues through research grants. Looking at their grant recipients, I can see top names from a variety of the best US schools. Additionally, they have a very high score on Charity Navigator. Hopefully this will help identify and treat a variety of mental illnesses in future generations.
So here's my plan: I'm going to pressure my friends to commit some money for the joy of watching me grow my (unimpressive) beard for the entire month of November. Since I'm starting late, I pledge to continue growing it until Dec 8. I will match, dollar-for-dollar, each donation. I will also donate on November 28, when my employer will contribute 2:1 whatever I give. In so doing, my friends, I will multiply your contribution by 6x. It may not be much, but at least this year it's not nothing.
